While Avian Influenza (H5 HPAI) primarily affects birds, cats are susceptible and can contract the virus through exposure to or eating infected birds and wildlife or by coming into contact with the virus via the environment.

In early August 2026, Dr Sally Coggins presented a webinar, Implications of Avian Influenza for Feline Practice: Cats as Sentinel Hosts, for the Centre of Veterinary Education. “This session with Dr Sally Coggins reviews recent feline experiences from North America, Europe and Asia, highlighting key risk factors, clinical presentations, and lessons relevant to companion animal practice.”
